Meet the Asian American Reality Show Producers

Remember that Asian American Reality Show that is being produced by Tyrese? KoreAm got the lowdown from the other producers Eugene Choi, Mike Le, and Eddie Kim. The show will take place in Koreatown in Los Angeles. While we still don’t know what to expect, SNL and Chelsea Lately already had their spin on it. In the casting, the producers want to see multi dimensional characters. Not your typical Asian stereotypes like the nerd, the martial artist, the slutty girl. No William Hung or Yao Ming here. Apparently, people around the country are trying to get on the show. Could there be an Asian with a southern draw or an Asian Guido casted? Look for the show coming soon.

The Asian Jersey Shore...

Yes, this post is long overdue. So there is mad hype about Tyrese producing an Asian version of “MTV’s Jersey Shore.” However, there is great debate over how Asian Americans will be further portrayed in American entertainment. Without being too political or critical, it’s worth a look.

The bottom line is that Asian Americans are consistently discriminated against in all forms of entertainment – except break-dancing and all forms of hip hop dance, we pretty much own it now.
The decision is up to you. Will Asian American stereotypes be erased? Or will new ones form? (www.RoastList.com) Personally, I wish someone had the opportunity to try something like this when Ktown was really popping in Los Angeles.

K-Town producers talk about their new reality show

by mashimello on April 27, 2010 @ 1:30 PM (EDT) · 35 comments
Earlier this month, actor Tyrese Gibson’s production company announced that they would be producing an Asian spin-off of Jersey Shore named Koreatown (K-Town). Although the production of K-Town is still in the works, it has already received both backlash as well as much support from the Asian community. Even so, there’s no doubt that the reality show is garnering tons of attention!
Producers Eugene Choi, Mike Le, and Eddie Kim recently sat down with IAmKoreAm for an interview of their new show. During the interview, the producers discussed various questions including the casting of the show as well as their goals of the show. Check it out!

It’s about time that Asians get recognized in America… but I have some reservations. I can’t help but feel a bit worried on how the show will portray Asian Americans. Call me traditional, but when I first saw Jersey Shore, my jaw dropped. I still wonder how it could have gained so much popularity–eh, who am I kidding. It’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi!
Anyway, I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the show will bring us! Hopefully, it’ll break the typical Asian stereotypes. As producer Eddie Kim said, “We’re going to show Asian Americans like they’ve never seen before to the rest of the world!”

The Prophesies Have Come True, MTV Ktown is Upon Us

I pulled this article from http://www.allkpop.com/2010/04/koreatown-will-be-the-new-jersey-shore:

"What’s this, you’re hoping that this is one of those articles where the title is totally misleading and doesn’t actually mean what it says? Well, it’s not. It’s been confirmed that a new reality television series based around Koreatown life will be made — but wait, there’s more. Co-producing the show will be rapper-turned-actor-turned-entrepreneur Tyrese Gibson.

What?! That’s right. In case you’re not familiar with his work, Tyrese is an African American R&B singer/rapper, and you’ve most likely seen him in the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious and both Transformers movies as a special forces soldier.

An advertisement recently went up on Craiglist saying,

'Tyrese Gibson’s production company HQ Pictures is looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc.. We need beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.'

But you don’t need to be a Korean or even Asian to join the show. Although Asians are preferred, as long as the person has experienced Koreatown life and is “obsessed with Asian culture”, they may be considered for casting.

Many doubted the legitimacy of the ad until Tyrese Gibson himself confirmed it on his official Twitter account. Now the news is spreading like wildfire and there seem to be mixed reviews everywhere.

As great as it may be to finally have the Korean culture brought into the light on a bigger scale, a show that may be like MTV’s Jersey Shore might not be a good thing. For those of you that aren’t familiar with this show, Jersey Shore focuses on the lives of a few young Italians called “guidos”. Since the start of the show, there has been much outcry and backlash from the Italian community for the inappropriate portrayal of their culture. But who knows, this may turn out to be different, and we should give the show the benefit of doubt.

So what do you guys think–yay or nay?"

I told you this would happen, I predicted it all the way back in January. At first I thought this was a joke, but it seems pretty legit. All I know is, two things will happen: (1) It will be nowhere near as awesomely bad as Jersey Shore. It will just be plain bad. (2) It will set back Asian American progress back 1000 years.

And what the Hell, you don't even have to be Asian to be in it? All you need is an "obsession with Asian culture?" What is that, a wink to all the Yellow Fevered White guys out there? Would you have non-guidos on Jersey Shore? How does it make sense to do that with Asians? And what does it mean to be "experienced in Koreatown life?" Does having Korean BBQ there twice a month count?

I say NAY to this abomination!

YAY FOR CHUNNIE!! (+ a Korean Version of Jersey Shore?? WTF?!)

So I was on AKP just a while ago and I read some shit that apparently MTV is trying to do a fucking show called ‘KoreaTown’ (Yes. Really.) and that it’ll be a spin-off of Jersey Shore and that Tyrese is going to be producing it…

WTF?!!!!

I see utter fail all over this bullshit. Why in the hell would they even think about doing some shit like this?? I will admit I watched Jersey Shore and that shit was just a hot ass mess. Why would they make a spin-off from that?!

apparently they are looking for ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ people…Yeah..basically they mean you have to dress like an utter slut, be a fucking alchoholic, and have absolutely no class whatsoever.

And good news for people who aren’t ASIAN!! You guys can apply to! As long as you love/are obsessed with Asian culture!! *SARCASM*

I just want to say that Asians have enough negative stereotypes against them. They don’t need anymore. And I can guarentee you guys that any person they get to be on that show will be a hot shitty mess.

As for the Non-Asians…It’s bad enough that people who like anything Asian-related are seen as weird…I’m sure the person they get for that role will be a complete and utter weirdo that will make everyone in America think that all people who love/are obsessed with Asian culture act that way…

This is not a good fucking idea.

COMPLETE AND UTTER FAIL MTV!

What do you guys think about this???

Casting for Asian-American "Jersey Shore"

The casting website stated the show would be like an Asian "Jersey Shore." I don't know how I feel about this, but at least there's going to be some more Asians on TV...

Casting Asian Americans for reality show produced by Tyrese
"We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

People should respond to this Craigslist ad. Casting session on Sat/Sun April 24/25:

8 Asians

http://www.8asians.com/2010/04/19/casting-application-for-auditions-of-the-asian-jersey-shore-asks-about-drinking-fighting/

Source: 8 Asians, April 19, 2010 | |

As more details about the Tyrese-backed Asian-American Jersey Shore come to light, I for one, can’t wait to see where this train wreck is going to crash.

The details on this project (currently known as “Untitled K-Town Project”) are currently few and far between since the project is still ramping up and prepping for casting, but I would bet good money that there will be drinking, fighting, and a ton of slutty hot looking girls and boys involved.

I can make these speculations with tremendous confidence because one, reality shows usually cast hotties and two, a tipster has forwarded us the questions that applicants are supposed to fill out prior to the audition and they are extremely interested in knowing if you drink, fight or have naked pictures of yourself on the internet.

Now, I know some of these questions are standard-fare for other auditions, but putting them into context that this is a reality show set in K-Town, some of these questions really crack me up. Here are my favorites (emphasis is mine):

(7) Have you ever been arrested and/or charged with a crime? If so, what was it for?
(8) Are there any nude or other revealing or compromising images of you that are available publicly either through the Internet, video or otherwise? If so, please describe and explain.
(12) Do you smoke? If so, what do you smoke and how often?
(13) Do you drink alcohol? If so, how often do you drink and how much? How do you act when drunk?
(17) Do you have a temper? How often do you lose your temper? What provokes you? How do you deal with anger?
(18) How many fights have you been in? When was the last time (if any) you hit, punched, kicked, or threw something in anger? Please provide details.
(20) What are you most ashamed of, either now or in your past?
(21) What are your thoughts on Koreatown? How do you feel about Koreatown? What do you think of the guys and girls in Koreatown?
(23) How often do you frequent these types of establishments in Koreatown? (Specify per week, month, year, etc.)
Restaurants? Bars? Night Clubs? Karaoke Rooms? Hostess Bars?
(25) Have you experienced booking” at a Korean night club? What are your thoughts on this practice?

Based on these questions, it’s too bad that this “groundbreaking” effort — the first Asian-American based reality TV show — isn’t looking for some crazy Asians who like to publicly post email conversations which spiral out of control. Because if that’s what the casting folks are looking for, I just might have an in on that.

Audition Information: The production company is asking folks to fill out the application/questionnaire and bring it (and a headshot) to the open casting call this Saturday, April 24th from 12 noon – 6pm. (They’re expecting a large turn-out for a limited number of spots, so people who want to be on this should arrive early to the location: HQ Pictures, 1635 N. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.)
