K-Town Reality Show Promotes New Stereotype for Asian Men

July 28th, 2010 | 16 comments | Posted by Jen
There’s been a lot of talk about whether the K-Town Reality Show–aka “The Asian Jersey Shore”–will break down or reinforce stereotypes of Asians (check out this comment thread over at channel APA, for example).
But no one’s talking about how the show might create new stereotypes. Like, the stereotype that…

…ASIAN MEN REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HATE SHIRTS.
This stereotype has the potential to be seriously damaging. Think about it.
It could hurt Asian men seeking employment, especially with employers who require shirts to be worn in the workplace, a job sector where Asians have traditionally excelled.
Before you know it, “Asian men hate shirts” will become an internet meme. When people Google “Asian men,” the first suggestion that’ll come up won’t be “hairstyles,” it’ll be “hate shirts.”

Then after that, all you’ll see on TV and in movies will be Asian men with their shirts off.
This stereotype could even haunt Asian men for generations to come, causing those either brave or stupid enough to continue wearing shirts to feel like they’re not Asian enough or, worse, like they don’t exist at all.

We all heard through the blogosphere that a new series was looking for the next pickle-breathed Snookie and Pauly Shore-faced “The Situation” for a new Los Angeles Koreatown-based show, but how many exactly have already applied?
A source, who’s an insider at the show by HD Pictures–Tyrese Gibson’s production company–tells me exclusively that although a preliminary cast has already been chosen, they are still sifting through over 500 applications they’ve since received.
(Don’t know what a K-towner looks like? Here are some sample Koreatown boys and girls below to emulate courtesy of KTown 213):

But with so much flavor to choose from in Koreatown, who made the initial cut?
According to my source, filming has already begun and that the entire crew was even filmed at a local Koreatown noraebang singing 2NE1 songs–”Tyrese was there too,” the source quips.

But don’t get your hopes up, reality show hopefuls! Though there has been a preliminary cast, it has not been finalized. “Things might change after next, next week and the next two days,” the source says of the current casting.
Still seriously considering being on the show? You gotta get through the application first!
Some sample questions below:
Please BE HONEST! Any answer may be verified for accuracy. Don’t answer a question hoping to give us the answer we “want” to hear. We understand some questions you may not be able to or may not want to answer, so just fill out as much as you can to the best of your ability.
(8) Are there any nude or other revealing or compromising images of you that are available publicly either through the Internet, video or otherwise? If so, please describe and explain.
(13) Do you drink alcohol? If so, how often do you drink and how much? How do you act when drunk?
(17) Do you have a temper? How often do you lose your temper? What provokes you? How do you deal with anger?
(18) How many fights have you been in? When was the last time (if any) you hit, punched, kicked, or threw something in anger? Please provide details.
(23) How often do you frequent these types of establishments in Koreatown? (Specify per week, month, year, etc.)
Restaurants? ____________________________________
Bars? ____________________________________
Night Clubs? ____________________________________
Karaoke Rooms? ____________________________________
Hostess Bars? ____________________________________
(25) Have you experienced “booking” at a Korean night club? What are your thoughts on this practice?
Think what you have what it takes to apply? Email asianrealityshow@yahoo.com or check out the Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115378135141100
There will also be two casting dates and good luck!

Casting Koreatown Guidos

Believe it or not but someone is trying to create a show that’s a cross between Koreans and the Jersey Shore kids. Apparently there’s a Craigslist listing that is “… looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”

Koreantown New Jersey Shore

When I first read about an ad on craiglist (of all sleazy places) for recruiting hopefuls in a spin-off MTV’s Jersey Shore.Model/Actor now show producer Tyrese Gibson confirm the rumor via Twiiter.
“Tyrese Gibson’s production company HQ Pictures is looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc.. My guess you’ll be living in Korean town and you don’t have to be Asian but knowledgeable or have a curiosity. If anyone ever watched the Real World or Jersey Shore know the level of deprecatory this could bring from staring on these so-called reality shows.I find this all a little interesting on how Hollywood has grown an interest for Asian people and culture.Lets just hope they don’t degrade and embarrass those of this community. Shows like this follow a very distinctive formula.Find bitchy, drunken, and super horny people.Stuff them in a house with cameras constantly rolling and let the madness unfold.People are either gonna be screwing each other or mentally breaking each other down for our entertainment.Good luck to those who participate in this most likely I’ll be watching if this ever happens.

"Jersey Shore" Meets KTown?

Author: Sylvie Kim

Via 8Asians, casting has begun for a Koreatown reality series in the vein of MTV hit Jersey Shore. You’ve got your headshots ready, right? The show seeks:
“…attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.
Translation: We want to exploit you as a vapid stereotype. Ka-ching!

When they say “Koreatown life,” I doubt they want to know what’s it like to bus tables at the tofu house or drive your halmoni to Sunday service. Koreatown + young Asian Americans = partying. Partying = limitless opportunities to make an ass of yourself on camera.
Some might argue that displaying Asian Americans in such a light is counter to staid representations of passive, nerdy yellow folk, but in my opinion, the hard-partying, materialistic, club-crazy Asian is pretty damn familiar, at least in your average metropolitan American city. So to me, it just sounds like good ol’ fashioned money-makin’ off of a cultural gimmick.
In some way, I do think it’s notable that Asian Americans are being seen as an audience draw for a reality show that has nothing to do with painful awkwardness or a bisexual orgy.
Then I ask myself: Do we really need a Korean or Asian American Snookie or The Situation? Haven’t Asian/Americans been pummeled enough throughout the history of Western media?
Now I’m empathizing with Italian American groups who protested the Jersey Shore series which turned “guido” from an ethnic slur into a term of endearment and introduced the ingenious acronym GTL (“gym, tanning, laundry” for those of you who aren’t in the know) as the supposed credo of proud Italian Americans everywhere. Most of us don’t want shallowness or stupidity inextricably linked with our entire culture. I admit, I watched Jersey Shore religiously. Perhaps we Asian Americans that indulged in some JWoww and Pauly D voyeurism are getting our comeuppance with the production of this new series.
But, according to the casting notice, not everyone on the show may be Asian American. They’re willing to take on non-Asians who are “obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way.” If I were cast on this show and they made me bunk next to some creeper with Yellow Fever, I’d be straight pissed. The Soju bottles and Louis Vuitton bags strategically placed on set by the producers and commercial sponsors would be flying.
Which I guess would make for good television…which means I’m totally gonna watch this show. In fact, I’m going to audition. Every reality show cast needs a black sheep who is antithetical to what the producers want on screen, someone who will be mercilessly ostracized by the other cast members and sent to the confessional booth in tears and with ragged remnants of self-esteem. I buy cheap clothes, drive a dinged-up car, rock the monolids, have a BMI over 17, my Korean sucks, and I can’t stand trance music. That could be me on TV! [Fist pump]

Entertainer and entrepreneur Tyrese Gibson has confirmed that his production company has an Asian American version of MTV’s JERSEY SHORE in the works. A casting call went out on Craigslist LA with a location listed of “Los Angeles/Hollywood/Koreatown” (Read the ad here.)

An Asian American Version of 'Jersey Shore'?

After the huge success of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” the rumor mill says that there could be an Asian knock-off of the show in the works. According to a Los Angeles Craiglist posting, a production company is “looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”
As if this doesn’t get any better, reportedly Tyrese Gibson is co-producing the series—how random. We’re not sure if this might simply be the worst thing ever (we cringe just thinking of all the Asian stereotypes the show may portray)—or if it’ll be so bad, it’s good (much like the original “Jersey Shore.”) For now, we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this. yes, the koreatown reality show is happening

Thank you to everyone who's been sending me articles and links about the proposed Koreatown reality show -- a 'Jersey Shore' for Asians,' they're calling it -- that's reportedly in the works. Dude, I'm well aware of it. Here's the casting call I posted a couple of weeks back. Not sure why the news is suddenly all over the place.

Since then, I've learned that the production is indeed legit and in the works, and yes, actor-model Tyrese Gibson's company is producing it. They even already have a potential cast of characters they're looking at. Believe it or not, I actually met Tyrese over the weekend. (Yeah, it was a surreal night in Koreatown... but that's another story.)

I know some people horrified by the idea of a Jersey Shore-esque reality show featuring Asian Americans. Part of me is. But I'm also completely intrigued. Hey, K-town is full of unique, colorful people with plenty of TV trainwreck potential -- I'm surprised no one thought of this sooner. Honestly, I would totally watch this.

"Jersey Shore" for Asian-Americans!!!!

by Sofa King

allamericangirl-lrg12553110_std1Tyrese Gibson (Transformers, 2 Fast 2 Furious) is co-producing a “Jersey Shore” type Reality Show set in LA’s Koreatown. That’s right folks. A casting call for Asian-Americans or just plain Americans with Asian fetishes is underway.
Here are some excerpts from the LA Craigslist casting call:
“Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-americans to cast in a reality show similar to ‘Jersey Shore,’ ‘Real World,’ ‘The Hills, ‘etc…”
“We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and persepctives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”
“If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain,”
Tyrese (you know him as the Black army dude from Transformers, your older brother knows him as the Black racer/convict from 2 Fast 2 Furious, your eldest sister still keeps a pinup of him from when he was modeling for Tommy Hilfiger) is said to have been clubbing around in the hotspots of LA’s Koreatown for “research”…I wish I had a job like that.
And here I thought the formula for a successful show was to just simply get a bunch of attractive (horny) looking people together in close proximity, throw in some alcohol and turn on a hot tub. I’m actually not a big fan of reality shows. I hate them. But being an Asian-American, I realize that I too have an Asian-Fetish. So I will be forgoeing my self-imposed ban on Reality Shows to support my Yellow Fellows simply because we simply need more of a presence in the media.
My only concern is the shows premise. The cast will have to undoubtebly exude characteristics that define them as “Asian-American”. The show might do well and I wish it all the best, but it might be for all the wrong reasons. Jersey Shore’s success is built around the character’s portrayal of stereotypes. We enjoy to watch them because we enjoy laughing at them without fear of getting punched in the face…well actually…
Note: The image attached to this post is NOT the cast of this developing series. It’s actually from the first American Sitcom to feature an all Asian cast starring comedian Margaret Cho: All American Girl

Koreatown will be the new Jersey Shore!
by shockimpulse

849Share
What’s this, you’re hoping that this is one of those articles where the title is totally misleading and doesn’t actually mean what it says? Well, it’s not. It’s been confirmed that a new reality television series based around Koreatown life will be made — but wait, there’s more. Co-producing the show will be rapper-turned-actor-turned-entrepreneur Tyrese Gibson.
What?! That’s right. In case you’re not familiar with his work, Tyrese is an African American R&B singer/rapper, and you’ve most likely seen him in the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious and both Transformers movies as a special forces soldier.
An advertisement recently went up on Craiglist saying,
“Tyrese Gibson’s production company HQ Pictures is looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc.. We need beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”
But you don’t need to be a Korean or even Asian to join the show. Although Asians are preferred, as long as the person has experienced Koreatown life and is “obsessed with Asian culture”, they may be considered for casting.
Many doubted the legitimacy of the ad until Tyrese Gibson himself confirmed it on his official Twitter account. Now the news is spreading like wildfire and there seem to be mixed reviews everywhere.
As great as it may be to finally have the Korean culture brought into the light on a bigger scale, a show that may be like MTV’s Jersey Shore might not be a good thing. For those of you that aren’t familiar with this show, Jersey Shore focuses on the lives of a few young Italians called “guidos”. Since the start of the show, there has been much outcry and backlash from the Italian community for the inappropriate portrayal of their culture. But who knows, this may turn out to be different, and we should give the show the benefit of doubt.
So what do you guys think–yay or nay?

Asian American Jersey Shore

We've all heard about or seen the notorious show Jersey Shore that has been airing on MTV since last year. It is very entertaining. I even "fist pump" every blue moon, but it's also so crasp. When I first read its synopsis I knew I wasn't going to like it. But then one day I finally sat down and watched it... for five minutes. That's all I could stand before I turned the channel. I know someone that watched it for an hour and he said that he can never regain back that hour he lost in his life.
Well now there's talk of an Asian version of New Jersey Shore. Go figure. It is going to be co-produced by R&B singer Tyrese Gibson and it will be set in Koreatown, LA. What can we expect? Will the series be a hit? Will Asian Americans be kept to their stereotype? Will it show Asian Americans as having multi-dimensional characters? Will I be able to sit through it for more than five minutes? A production company on Craigslist says that they are looking for attractive, unique Asian Americans between the ages of 18-30 "with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life." So all those interested, go to the casting calls and I hope to see you on the show, because I'll be watching.

Jersey Shore Goes To KTown
Posted by Jen

A casting call has gone out on Craigslist: LA looking for “interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans” to star in a reality show in the style of Jersey Shore and The Real World. Tyrese is allegedly producing.

The notice sez:
We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.
Personally I think this idea’s genius, and I’d like Diana to audition for the show–I’m too old, which, for once, I think, is a good thing–mostly so she could fuck some bitches up, because that’s what they do on reality TV, right? That and get arrested? Plus, she has access to a Bumpit–her sister’s–plus, she loves the Koreatown life, particularly the Koreatown restaurants. (I actually had to look up what a Bumpit was, which, also, I think, is a good thing?)
The show is even looking for non-Asians to round out the cast.
If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain.
Yes, yes, and while you’re at it–you who are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way (um, I think you know what they’re talkin about)–why don’t you email us and explain, too, you horny freak you.

Star in an Asian American Jersey Shore

I am one of the millions of Americans who has seen each and every sorry episode of Jersey Shore. I was horrified at some of the antics of Snooki, The Situation and friends, yet I couldn’t tear my eyeballs away.
Now I’m reading about this ad on Craigslistfrom Tyrese Gibson’s production companylooking for what could be a totally awesome…or truly abominable new reality series: an Asian-American version of Jersey Shore. Here’s what the ad says:
Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life. If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain.
Three things came to mind when I read this ad.
  1. I’m not sure what to make of the fact that they welcome non-Asians who are “obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way.” (The f word is right on the tip of my tongue.)
  2. Why does the ad ask for Asian Americans, and yet they emphasize “Koreatown life”? Then again,Jersey Shore sought to cast guidos, but they ended up with a couple of non-Italians, like JWoww.
  3. Reality TV often exploits and stereotypes its contestants, so I have my reservations about how “Koreatown life” would be portrayed.
Regardless of how you feel about this, it’s best to keep in mind that this potential show is a long, long way from becoming a TV series. A long way. It might not even happen. I mean, just think about it. An all Asian American cast on TV? Yeah, right!

Asian American "Jersey Shore" spinoff in the works?!?!?

jersey shore cast_20100404_aatheory
Mark my words, I will pump a million and one fists if this thing actually comes into fabulously full fruition!
Apparently, a production company (Tyrese Gibson is rumored to be one of the co-producers) recently posted a Craiglist’s ad asking for the following:
looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.
If this as-yet-unnamed thing ever sees the light of commercialized airtime, it will make history as the first ever Asian American reality-based show. After following the immensely infamous successes of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” I guess these producers are looking to cash in by riding on the bastardizing-a-cherished-culture-through-teenaged-punks wave. And what better way than to follow young AAs in dramaliscious K-town?
koreatown la_20100404_aatheory
Oh, and non-Asians can apply as well, but being “obsessed with Asian culture or people” is unsurprising necessary requirement.

Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc..

Please email us headshots/photos and a cover letter briefly describing yourself and why you should be included in this show. Be sure to include basic contact info such as name, age, phone #, email, and any other bits of interesting information that will make you stand out. Please feel free to include information and pictures on any of your friends that you think will also be a good candidate for this reality show.

We will begin casting and filming on-camera interviews in LOS ANGELES or HOLLYWOOD, CA next week so please send in your info ASAP!
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued by the premise of this show. You know "the K-Town life" is totally ripe for the reality show treatment. Hell, I'm surprised this hasn't already been tried before. I'm already imagining the can't-stop-watching train wreck this show has the potential to be.
