Meet the Asian American Reality Show Producers

Remember that Asian American Reality Show that is being produced by Tyrese? KoreAm got the lowdown from the other producers Eugene Choi, Mike Le, and Eddie Kim. The show will take place in Koreatown in Los Angeles. While we still don’t know what to expect, SNL and Chelsea Lately already had their spin on it. In the casting, the producers want to see multi dimensional characters. Not your typical Asian stereotypes like the nerd, the martial artist, the slutty girl. No William Hung or Yao Ming here. Apparently, people around the country are trying to get on the show. Could there be an Asian with a southern draw or an Asian Guido casted? Look for the show coming soon.

The Asian Jersey Shore...

Yes, this post is long overdue. So there is mad hype about Tyrese producing an Asian version of “MTV’s Jersey Shore.” However, there is great debate over how Asian Americans will be further portrayed in American entertainment. Without being too political or critical, it’s worth a look.

The bottom line is that Asian Americans are consistently discriminated against in all forms of entertainment – except break-dancing and all forms of hip hop dance, we pretty much own it now.
The decision is up to you. Will Asian American stereotypes be erased? Or will new ones form? (www.RoastList.com) Personally, I wish someone had the opportunity to try something like this when Ktown was really popping in Los Angeles.

K-Town producers talk about their new reality show

by mashimello on April 27, 2010 @ 1:30 PM (EDT) · 35 comments
Earlier this month, actor Tyrese Gibson’s production company announced that they would be producing an Asian spin-off of Jersey Shore named Koreatown (K-Town). Although the production of K-Town is still in the works, it has already received both backlash as well as much support from the Asian community. Even so, there’s no doubt that the reality show is garnering tons of attention!
Producers Eugene Choi, Mike Le, and Eddie Kim recently sat down with IAmKoreAm for an interview of their new show. During the interview, the producers discussed various questions including the casting of the show as well as their goals of the show. Check it out!

It’s about time that Asians get recognized in America… but I have some reservations. I can’t help but feel a bit worried on how the show will portray Asian Americans. Call me traditional, but when I first saw Jersey Shore, my jaw dropped. I still wonder how it could have gained so much popularity–eh, who am I kidding. It’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi!
Anyway, I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the show will bring us! Hopefully, it’ll break the typical Asian stereotypes. As producer Eddie Kim said, “We’re going to show Asian Americans like they’ve never seen before to the rest of the world!”

The Prophesies Have Come True, MTV Ktown is Upon Us

I pulled this article from http://www.allkpop.com/2010/04/koreatown-will-be-the-new-jersey-shore:

"What’s this, you’re hoping that this is one of those articles where the title is totally misleading and doesn’t actually mean what it says? Well, it’s not. It’s been confirmed that a new reality television series based around Koreatown life will be made — but wait, there’s more. Co-producing the show will be rapper-turned-actor-turned-entrepreneur Tyrese Gibson.

What?! That’s right. In case you’re not familiar with his work, Tyrese is an African American R&B singer/rapper, and you’ve most likely seen him in the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious and both Transformers movies as a special forces soldier.

An advertisement recently went up on Craiglist saying,

'Tyrese Gibson’s production company HQ Pictures is looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc.. We need beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.'

But you don’t need to be a Korean or even Asian to join the show. Although Asians are preferred, as long as the person has experienced Koreatown life and is “obsessed with Asian culture”, they may be considered for casting.

Many doubted the legitimacy of the ad until Tyrese Gibson himself confirmed it on his official Twitter account. Now the news is spreading like wildfire and there seem to be mixed reviews everywhere.

As great as it may be to finally have the Korean culture brought into the light on a bigger scale, a show that may be like MTV’s Jersey Shore might not be a good thing. For those of you that aren’t familiar with this show, Jersey Shore focuses on the lives of a few young Italians called “guidos”. Since the start of the show, there has been much outcry and backlash from the Italian community for the inappropriate portrayal of their culture. But who knows, this may turn out to be different, and we should give the show the benefit of doubt.

So what do you guys think–yay or nay?"

I told you this would happen, I predicted it all the way back in January. At first I thought this was a joke, but it seems pretty legit. All I know is, two things will happen: (1) It will be nowhere near as awesomely bad as Jersey Shore. It will just be plain bad. (2) It will set back Asian American progress back 1000 years.

And what the Hell, you don't even have to be Asian to be in it? All you need is an "obsession with Asian culture?" What is that, a wink to all the Yellow Fevered White guys out there? Would you have non-guidos on Jersey Shore? How does it make sense to do that with Asians? And what does it mean to be "experienced in Koreatown life?" Does having Korean BBQ there twice a month count?

I say NAY to this abomination!

YAY FOR CHUNNIE!! (+ a Korean Version of Jersey Shore?? WTF?!)

So I was on AKP just a while ago and I read some shit that apparently MTV is trying to do a fucking show called ‘KoreaTown’ (Yes. Really.) and that it’ll be a spin-off of Jersey Shore and that Tyrese is going to be producing it…

WTF?!!!!

I see utter fail all over this bullshit. Why in the hell would they even think about doing some shit like this?? I will admit I watched Jersey Shore and that shit was just a hot ass mess. Why would they make a spin-off from that?!

apparently they are looking for ‘interesting’ and ‘fun’ people…Yeah..basically they mean you have to dress like an utter slut, be a fucking alchoholic, and have absolutely no class whatsoever.

And good news for people who aren’t ASIAN!! You guys can apply to! As long as you love/are obsessed with Asian culture!! *SARCASM*

I just want to say that Asians have enough negative stereotypes against them. They don’t need anymore. And I can guarentee you guys that any person they get to be on that show will be a hot shitty mess.

As for the Non-Asians…It’s bad enough that people who like anything Asian-related are seen as weird…I’m sure the person they get for that role will be a complete and utter weirdo that will make everyone in America think that all people who love/are obsessed with Asian culture act that way…

This is not a good fucking idea.

COMPLETE AND UTTER FAIL MTV!

What do you guys think about this???

Casting for Asian-American "Jersey Shore"

The casting website stated the show would be like an Asian "Jersey Shore." I don't know how I feel about this, but at least there's going to be some more Asians on TV...

Casting Asian Americans for reality show produced by Tyrese
"We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

8 Asians

http://www.8asians.com/2010/04/19/casting-application-for-auditions-of-the-asian-jersey-shore-asks-about-drinking-fighting/

Source: 8 Asians, April 19, 2010 | |

As more details about the Tyrese-backed Asian-American Jersey Shore come to light, I for one, can’t wait to see where this train wreck is going to crash.

The details on this project (currently known as “Untitled K-Town Project”) are currently few and far between since the project is still ramping up and prepping for casting, but I would bet good money that there will be drinking, fighting, and a ton of slutty hot looking girls and boys involved.

I can make these speculations with tremendous confidence because one, reality shows usually cast hotties and two, a tipster has forwarded us the questions that applicants are supposed to fill out prior to the audition and they are extremely interested in knowing if you drink, fight or have naked pictures of yourself on the internet.

Now, I know some of these questions are standard-fare for other auditions, but putting them into context that this is a reality show set in K-Town, some of these questions really crack me up. Here are my favorites (emphasis is mine):

(7) Have you ever been arrested and/or charged with a crime? If so, what was it for?
(8) Are there any nude or other revealing or compromising images of you that are available publicly either through the Internet, video or otherwise? If so, please describe and explain.
(12) Do you smoke? If so, what do you smoke and how often?
(13) Do you drink alcohol? If so, how often do you drink and how much? How do you act when drunk?
(17) Do you have a temper? How often do you lose your temper? What provokes you? How do you deal with anger?
(18) How many fights have you been in? When was the last time (if any) you hit, punched, kicked, or threw something in anger? Please provide details.
(20) What are you most ashamed of, either now or in your past?
(21) What are your thoughts on Koreatown? How do you feel about Koreatown? What do you think of the guys and girls in Koreatown?
(23) How often do you frequent these types of establishments in Koreatown? (Specify per week, month, year, etc.)
Restaurants? Bars? Night Clubs? Karaoke Rooms? Hostess Bars?
(25) Have you experienced booking” at a Korean night club? What are your thoughts on this practice?

Based on these questions, it’s too bad that this “groundbreaking” effort — the first Asian-American based reality TV show — isn’t looking for some crazy Asians who like to publicly post email conversations which spiral out of control. Because if that’s what the casting folks are looking for, I just might have an in on that.

Audition Information: The production company is asking folks to fill out the application/questionnaire and bring it (and a headshot) to the open casting call this Saturday, April 24th from 12 noon – 6pm. (They’re expecting a large turn-out for a limited number of spots, so people who want to be on this should arrive early to the location: HQ Pictures, 1635 N. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.)

It's a Jersey Shore World

Thursday, 08 April 2010 10:39
2diggsdigg

Nation, when The Jersey Shore first aired on MTV what seems like ages ago, we here at JSR predicted far reaching social consequences. Similar to disco in the 70's, neon in the 80's, and Hammer pants in the 90's, this show has the ability to forever change the pop culture landscape. We're already seeing the deep groundswell this show has created.

Take for example the new show Jerseylicious which began on the Style Network, March 21st. Jerseylicious follows seven salon employees, six women and one man, who run the Gatsby Salon "where big hair meets even bigger personalities." This is sure to be another Jersey hit. We can't tell you how much we enjoy shows about hair salons, but throw in a few trashy broads from Jersey – we smell Emmy nomination!
Jerseylicious

But it doesn't end there Nation. We all know that the Italian Americans that personify Jersey Shore are incredibly diverse, (Johnny, Pauly, Vinnie, Ronnie, Donnie, Fonzie – all unique in their own respect) which is why they now have broken down racial barriers and crossed socioeconomic lines in helping to create an Asian themed Jersey Shore! That was not a typo. Recently a production company has been posting ads on Craigslist for casting for an Asian themed reality show similar to Jersey Shore. The ad reads:

“Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life. If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain.”

Wow, there is so much awesomeness to digest from that. First, it’s great that you don’t even have to BE Asian for the show, just obsessed with its culture. We like that equal treatment. Second, for those of you not familiar with Koreatown, it is a magical and wonderful place. We can already see the montage for Season 1: Prop cars from the set of The Fast & Furious, Crown Royal flowing like water, midnight jaunts to the local rub and tug, and young Asian Americans who raise hell while also excelling in math and science. You know what that’s called? Number 1 ratings spot.

These are just two examples of the beginning of a new dawn. Be prepared Nation, this could be the initial stages of a cultural utopia.

'Angry Asian Man' challenges racial stereotyping at APAC's spring event

Lauren Mogannam

At the front of a University Hall classroom Thursday night, Phil Yu (Communication ’00) dared the audience to identify the photos of 12 Asian-American actors from the world of television. After Yu narrowed it down to a requirement of naming six, an audience member volunteered but was unable to muster enough answers.

“We don’t know who they are,” said Michelle Nitahara, a Bienen sophomore. “It is ironic that we say ‘the guy’ from ‘Heroes’ or ‘Lost.’”

About 50 Northwestern community members took in the presentation from Yu, who discussed his blog, Angry Asian Man. The room erupted in laughter as the Asian Pacific American Coalition’s spring speaker insisted that he isn’t quite what the title of his blog implies.

“Don’t use this in my presence,” he said, pointing to a picture of New York Yankees fans holding a poster reading “Matsui we love you long time.” “If you do then you might see the angry Asian man.”

Yu’s blog focuses on issues confronting the Asian-American community, Yu said.

“It mixes pop culture, entertainment, politics, basically anything that Asians living in America encounter on a daily basis,” he said. “Hopefully if people come to the site for entertainment at least they will get some of the more serious stuff.”

Yu, who is also a contact producer for Yahoo.com, was an ideal speaker for APAC’s annual spring event because his blog is in line with the group’s mission to highlight Asian-American issues, such as discrimination and racism, said Joe Spiro, APAC president.

“Hopefully this will awaken people’s consciences to latent and sometimes vocal anti-Asian-American racism by calling Asians the model minority, glossing over any flaws in the community,” the Communication junior said.

The model minority, or the idea that all Asian-Americans are doctors or engineers, is detrimental to the community as a whole because there are Asian-American groups suffering, Yu said.

With the creation of a “Jersey Shore”-type show focusing on individuals in Los Angeles’ Koreatown, the idea that all Asian-Americans are alike might dissipate, he said.

“This reality show is going to be painful, but admit it—you’re going to watch it. I would totally watch this,” Yu said. “Ultimately it will be a good thing and show that we aren’t all the same thing.”

Yu’s idea of creating a way to communicate issues and thoughts shared by Asian-Americans has its roots in NU, Yu said.

“This is where it all started,” he said. “Going to college was a time of discovering who I was as an Asian-American. I was trying to understand how to fit in and I was struck by really revolutionary ideas after taking an awesome Asian-American studies course.”

It is important for the NU community to create dialogue on issues faced by different groups like Asian-Americans, said Irene Liang, APAC’s co-programming chairwoman.

“I feel that these events might help people understand issues better and grow by learning about others different than themselves,” the Weinberg junior said. “I just wish more people would come.”

While the number of attendees was what Spiro expected, he said he wished a more diverse crowd had attended.

“I expected a less homogeneous crowd,” he said. “I was really surprised at the lack of diversity.”

Nitahara, a member of APAC, said she enjoyed the event.

“I was engaged the whole time,” she said. “I thought it was fun, enlightening and funny.”

Asian Jokes: Whatcha Gonna Do

Submitted by Ken Choy on April 12, 2010 - 1:34am

I laugh a lot. Much of the time inappropriately. No one can claim I don’t have a sense of humor.

Isn’t that the typical response to racist jokes targeted at Asian Pacific Islanders? That we should have a sense of humor?

I don’t find racist jokes funny.

Golf Digest’s writer Dan Jenkins twittered about golfer Y.E. Yang playing in the Masters this weekend. His 140 said, “Y.E. Yang is only three shots off the lead. I think we got takeout from him last night.”

Jenkins is said to be one of the greatest American sportswriters.

On April 5, Chelsea Handler’s Roundtable regulars Mandel and Wollack joked about a proposed Jersey Shore-esque production set in Koreatown. They bowed, and they made Chinese herb, math, and martial arts references. And with Michael Yo sitting next to them they cracked about not being able to tell the cast members apart. One of them -- which one is pretty insignificant as I can’t tell them apart because of their stupidity -- said he wants to know “what the slant of this will be.” While I’m appreciative of Chelsea’s comment that they were being racist, I wish Michael Yo’s fist would have had a collision with their faces. Instead he played the protestation-filled yet innocuous foil.

SNL's Seth Meyers this weekend also referred to the production showing a violin player as “their version of Snookie.”

Degree of offensiveness aside, what’s with this continual categorization of APIs?

“Whatcha gonna do?”

Is that something else you hear often in response to these situations?

I’ve been in Yo’s position more than I care to. And I’ve found that being the amenable, humor-filled play-along-with-the-jokes-with-mild-protests only spurs them on even more. So much so that their true racist colors come out.

Everyone was irate with situations like those of Don Imus and Bob Griese. Those instances were met with swift action. Not the case with the New York radio JV & Elvis situation which involved a prank call to a Chinese restaurant rife with demeaning comments about APIs, women, and LGBTs. The segment was actually replayed, and it took two weeks for the station to suspend the hosts. Adam Carolla has yet to receive any type of reprimand for his rant against Manny Pacquaio and the Philippines.

So what do APIs do? Do we continue to play along or do we do something else that incites a swift response?

The outrage at Britain’s Celebrity Big Brother over racist comments against Indian actress Shilpa Shetty led to sponsor withdrawal and government sanctions. LPGA abandoned its English-Only policy due to immediate reaction by Asian American Justice Center and Assemblymember Mike Eng.

Whatcha gonna do?

Jersey Shore: Asian Style!

Posted on by Izzy Tequila

The Jersey Shore fist pump is coming to Koreatown! Are you young, attractive, live a fun, ‘Jersey Shore’-inspired lifestyle and Asian? Well, here’s a oppurtunity you mother may not want you to take a chance on! The New York Post recently came across a casting notice for “interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to ‘Jersey Shore’” in the Help Wanted section of the Los Angeles Craigslist. The posting goes on to read the producers are looking for ”attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.” The best past is that this casting notice states if you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture, you can apply to be on the show, too. BINGO!!! This is the jackpot. Everyone knows that a) I have the personality to be on television, b) I absolutely LOVE Koreatown and c) who’s better to bring diversity to such a show as this than a gay, black man! Seriously, PICK ME!!!

Who knows if this show will even be cast or picked up, but I’m very, very, VERY intrigued by this! Stay Tune!

Enjoy,

Izzy T

Will Other Countries Create Their Own Versions of 'Jersey Shore?'

April 6, 2010 at 2:30 PM
| by JetSetCD | 1 Comment

Although the first season of MTV's successful reality show Jersey Shore has been over in the US for a few months, the series has just arrived overseas on MTV UK. It's the same cast of characters—JWoww, "The Situation," Snooki, Snooki's pouf, etc—and the same episodes, but it's the first time that this series has gone overseas. It's gotten us thinking: would the Jersey Shore equation work in other countries?

Could the world handle a "Rimini Shore" from Italy or "Ibiza House" from Spain? We'd at least watch their first series, until they eventually devolved into the grossness that is overseas Big Brother.

So until we can tune into "Ipanema Friends," we might just have to settle for whatever the west coast is cooking up by casting for Asians to star in a "Koreatown"-type reality show like Jersey Shore. Reports a casting call found by the New York Post: "We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

Oh boy.

Koreatown will be the new Jersey Shore!

What’s this, you’re hoping that this is one of those articles where the title is totally misleading and doesn’t actually mean what it says? Well, it’s not. It’s been confirmed that a new reality television series based around Koreatown life will be made — but wait, there’s more. Co-producing the show will be rapper-turned-actor-turned-entrepreneur Tyrese Gibson.

What?! That’s right. In case you’re not familiar with his work, Tyrese is an African American R&B singer/rapper, and you’ve most likely seen him in the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious and both Transformers movies as a special forces soldier.

An advertisement recently went up on Craiglist saying,

“Tyrese Gibson’s production company HQ Pictures is looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc.. We need beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”

So what do you guys think–yay or nay?

Excited for this show?

I love me some trashy tv.

So I suppose my blog has a reputation about discussing some trashy things. I say this because I got a text from my cousin, Stephanie the other day:

“Did you hear there’s a casting for an asian jersey shore? I thought you might like it because you had lots of jersey shore on your blog. haha”

And indeed I do. I am a fan of that program.

I will not disappoint, I will address this. Apparently, Tyrese Gibson’s production company is looking to make a TV show, similar to Jersey Shore and the Real World, for Asian Americans. The show is going to be in LA/Hollywood/Koreatown. They put a listing on craigslist – in case you were curious.

They are looking for: “beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life.”

Interesting right? I am SO looking forward to this. It will either suck or be crazy.

OR

I mean, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be at an Anime convention

If I lived in Cali, I would consider applying for like 3 minutes, I think. I would consider it mostly for blogging purposes. However, I don’t think I would make the show as interesting as they want. I would be the Vinny of the group, unfortunately. Maybe I should work on improving my personality.

I wonder if people who are not Asian (or extremely white washed Asians) will understand everything that is going on. There are subtleties in Asian American culture that I don’t think everyone would comprehend. This is kind of weird because there hasn’t really been any American shows about Asians. And the Asians that are in the current TV shows are either stereotypical, or just embarrassing.

For example, Brenda Song from the Suite Life of Zack and Cody:

She is pretty I think, but on the show she is just dumb as rocks. I understand that it’s her character, but it’s too much for me. This girl is 22 years old. 22.

*face in palm*

But if you think about it, there are very limited roles for Asians in tv shows. Which is one reason why I am extremely excited for this LA/Hollywood/Koreatown Jersey Shore thang. It’ll be the first show, that I have seen (other than a Korean drama -> a guilty pleasure), where the Asians are the main attraction. Regardless, I hope they choose a wide variety of Asians and we see some of this:

So intense. Notice his resistance.

Just kidding. I hope there isn’t any of this… but it would be kind of funny.

But seriously, if any of you apply to be on this show – PLEASE TELL ME.

And if you’re thinking of applying to be on the show – DO IT.

If you thought that an Asian Jersey Shore is crazy, how about you throw some walkers and dentures in there?

Yup, you guessed it – a Jersey Shore type show for senior citizens. Labeled the “geriatric Jersey Shore”, the show is called “Sunset Daze” and it’s on the WE channel and is scheduled to premier on April 28th. It takes place in an Arizona retirement community.

I read an interesting description of the show… “The big-haired party girl [Snooki] faces stiff competition from New York old-timer Gail Leibowitz – star of a naughty new series featuring Viagra-fueled seniors frolicking in hot tubs and talking about sex toys.” -NYDN

VOMIT in my mouth.

I’m sorry, but this is much too much. I cannot watch this one. But if you are interested, then go right on ahead. Let me know how it is.

How much more messed up can TV get? … or how much more amazing?

Who woulda guessed that Jersey Shore would have such a powerful effect? Dang. This is a SITUATION. For sure.

Koreatown Reality Show

Folks, don’t be alarmed. From reports, this is going to happen. Koreatown Reality show. It’s coming to a T.V. near you.

There had been talks about this for a while. You know how these TV folks do it. They pitch the idea around. A network shows interest. They negotiate. They tweak it and pitch again. And then there is funding, casting, and hiring of crews. It’s amazing anything even gets put on TV anymore with that amount of work it takes to put on a show, but it does. And they will.

There was an ad in Craigslist from Tyrese Gibson’s Production Company. So I guess it’s serious. They want to do a “Jersey Shore” type show. I don’t know what to think about this. Is this good, bad, or just crap?

'Jersey Shore' Boston spin-off in the works; Has stereotypical reality tv gone too far?

Jersey Shore ExaminerMelissa Viscount

Jersey Shore's second season has just gotten underway (at least on the production level) and already there's been casting for nearly half a dozen stereotypical spin-offs. The latest casting call is for a Boston Jersey Shore which seeks "blue collar, hard working, harder partying, tough talking, damn good looking Mass natives from all over the state .... Yea we'll consider preps from Wellesley too if they got what it takes."

Doron Ofir, the owner of Doron Ofir Casting, insists he's not looking for so-called "Massholes." Instead he tells the Boston Herald the wicked reality show will be more of "...a Love letter to the nation about (being from) Massachusetts.” Sure, and Jersey Shore is a prayer thanking God for everything good (namely big hair, fake tans, and nice abs) that has every come out of Jersey...oh, and New York and Rhode Island, too.

In just over the last week Doron Ofir Casting has put out casting calls for three different Jersey Shore-like shows. The casting company is looking for new roommates for the original Jersey Shore and new Jersey Shore-wannabes are wanted for the "Persian Version." A separate casting company also recently launched a casting call for Asian-Americans who want to be part of a Jersey Shore-like show (Note: being Asian isn't actually a requirement to be cast).

But how much stereotypical TV is too much and when will the novelty wear off? Jersey Shore didn't become a phenomenon because there were 10 other shows like it on television. MTV's reality show, Jersey Shore, has been compared to Real World time and time again and for good reason - the shows are almost identical. The only variation is the Real World roomies are just a bunch of random strangers, while the Jersey Shore's roommates are random (and now famous) guidos. The show caught a lot of criticism for its stereotypical portrayl of Italian-Americans. Some would argue it was those stereotypes and the outlandish lifestyle of the cast that practically made Jersey Shore a national passtime during the winter of 2010. It can't be argued the reality show drew in record viewers for MTV and surely that's what the producers of the spinoffs are hoping for. But is putting more stereotypical reality shows on television further dividing the country or simply entertainment for the masses? Leave a comment below.

MTV to produce hit reality show in L.A.'s Koreatown

Casts from the first season of Jersey Shore

MTV’s hit reality program “Jersey Shore” will produce the second season of its show at Los Angeles’ Koreatown, according to Ukopia, an online Korean media based in the United States.

Jersey Shore topped viewer ratings and is aired on 60 channels around the world. In previous episodes the show featured eight Italian-Americans in their early 20s living together in a house near the sea in New Jersey. The show got famous for its live coverage of the everyday lives of its stars, how they interact with each other all the way down to every little argument and unexpected turn of events accompanied by emotions of love, hate and jealousy.

“Thanks to the huge popularity of the show, there has been talk that MTV and Tyrese Gibson, 31, are joining hands to make an Asian version of it,” wrote Ukopia. “The rumor was confirmed as truth after website Craigslist posted a recruitment ad for Asian (especially Korean) cast members on April 5.”

According to the recruitment ad, this new show is looking for attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities aged 18 to 30, with a lifestyle focused in Koreatown. It added that one doesn’t have to be an Asian but must be familiar with Koreatown culture.

“The second season of Jersey Shore, which will be made in Koreatown version brings both high expectations and concern,” Ukopia said, “As the show plans to cover the wild lives of Asian youth, it could come as a shock to first generation Korean-Americans. At the same time this could be an opportunity to see the birth of new Korean-American stars.”

The good folks over at @channelAPA have a cool article about the recently revealed Asian American reality show set in Koreatown in Los Angeles, CA. Actor/singer/model Tyrese is heading up the production of this show. Head on over to channelAPA.com to read the whole article.

My thoughts on this show? Initially I was kinda worried since it was hinted that Mtv’s Jersey Shore was one of the inspirations for it. Would this portray Asian Americans in a bad light? Would Asian Americans clubbing and drinking on TV be detrimental to the “cause”? I say no. I have no idea how this show will ultimately be presented or marketed, but if the main purpose of the show is to show the “average night life” of Asian Americans in Koreatown then this can only be a good thing. It could potentially be ground breaking in terms of shattering previous misconceptions of Asian Americans held by your average television viewing audience. We are usually portrayed on television as either the “model minority” or the nerdy foreign exchange student with the heavy accent. Or were a doctor or scientist. Why can’t we also be just as stupidly drunk on TV like the rest of America?

Time will tell if this little experiment will be a success or failure. In the mean time if you’d like to actually be on the show read the channelAPA.com article to find the details on the casting call. Also, tell us your thoughts on this show in the comments below.

Persian and Asian Versions Of "The Jersey Shore" In Planning Stages

2010-04-09 - Television News
Joanna Mazewski - AHN Entertainment Editor

Hollywood, CA, United States (AHN) -- First the country's top guidos and guidettes made their way on to the Jersey Shore and hate list of every Italian-American society in the country, then their were rumors of a Russian version hitting Brooklyn's Brighton Beach and now it looks like the Persian and Asian communities are wanting a little slice of the hit MTV show's success too. Numerous outlets are reporting that there are currently open casting calls for Persian-Americans and Asian-Americans that are willing to bare all and then a little some for two new reality shows.

According to Perez Hilton, the Persian version's casting call reads: "Los Angeles [-based] proud Persian-Americans who rule the Hollywood nightlife and own Beverly Hills. It's time to show the world that being Persian-American is a celebration of the American dream."

It continues: "If your life is 'all about Gucci- Gabbana, Cavalli and Cristal' or if buying anything 'from BMWs and Bugatis, to Mercedes and Movado-money is no object,' then should apply."

Meanwhile, the Asian-American casting call is "looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-American to cast in a reality show similar to 'Jersey Shore,' 'Real World.' 'The Hills,' etc."

The ad also indicated that casting isn't limited strictly to Asian-Americans either, while it also did not say which production company had posted the notice.

With all these different reality shows being pitched, viewers might need to install translation apps on to their smart phones to keep up with the international lingo and phrases by these fame-hungry casts. We can only imagine how many versions of "The Situation" or a Snooki, audiences will be able to handle.

The Jersey Shore Goes Asian?

Written by XiXi Yang

Jersey Shore Asian

As we mentioned last night on Kyle Sherman Live radio show, a casting call has gone out in LA looking for "interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans" to star in a reality show in the style of Jersey Shore and The Real World. I made a joke about seeing a similar ad on Craigslist, and some of my friends (can you blame them?) told me afterwords that the ad was actually posted on Craigslist!

The notice said,

"We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

The show is even looking for non-Asians!

"If you are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way, email us and please explain."

This is crazy but it sounds like a perfect trainwreck of a concept for a reality show! The Asian culture is especially interesting because there are so many sub-cultures. One thing is for sure: the conservative Asian-American communities would really flip out.

The Asian Jersey Shore is coming to LA??

Please... no...

"You might not be The Situation, but we know you're out there: Spikey hair, Orange Crush tan, low-riding BMW M3, chiseled arms (24 Hour Fitness on Wilshire), A/X sleeveless t-shirt, fake Panerai. And you can rap. You're an Asian-American guido. And a reality show about the real Koreatown is looking for you.

According to this Craigslist posting, a production company is " ... looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life."

I'm pretty sure I'll be saying "f*cking asians..." like 12 times an episode.

Asian in the Media (Apr 10 edition)

Another MTV creation that features Asians seems to be underway. The Tyrese Gibson production company has posted an ad in Craigslist (of all places) for a casting call for Asian Americans:
Looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc. We need attractive Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share, especially individuals who know about and/or experienced the Koreatown life. Much like Jersey Shore, they are not looking for Koreans specifically but "Asian Americans", so it could be Asians of any heritage. I do doubt it would be a series since I don't know a lot of people who would want to see a show just about Asians.

Just what the world needs....a "Jersey Shore" ripoff with Asian-Americans in K-town

I'm getting reallly sick of these damn reality shows. Shows how desperate American entertainment industry is to find new ideas. I mean, they have a damn reality show of "housewives" for god sakes.

"looking for interesting, attractive, colorful Asian-Americans to cast in a reality show similar to JERSEY SHORE, REAL WORLD, THE HILLS, etc."

LMFAO. Give me a f*cking break. Its just an excuse to allow a bunch of idiot Korean-American kids who think the show will start their "film-careers" & make a fool of themselves & our (Korean-"American") culture.

We must thank the U.S for exploiting reality shows. Asia (Korea/Japan) used this format back in the 80's and 90's, but they never ruined it like u.s did in a matter of a decade.
